Are Microwave Ovens Safe? All about, you'll find many who will say that microwave ovens are unsafe. Is this a case of people fearing new things or are people on to something? Will you end up with a third arm if you eat too much microwaved food? Let's examine the case for and against the safety of microwave ovens. The simple truth, sad to say, is that we don't yet really know one way or the other. However, scientists have increasingly begun to look into the safety of microwaves. By and large the prevailing wisdom has long been that microwaves are safe. While no information has come along to convincingly disprove that belief, there have been some studies that make some people pause and wonder. Some studies into the whether microwave ovens are safe suggest that breast milk heated in a microwave loses some of its important nutrients. While some may be thinking, "Of course--it's been heated," the study concludes that the nutrient loss was outside of what would be expected merely due to the introduction of heat. It is important to note, however, that the study found that microwave ovens may have negated some of the nutrients, not necessarily added anything harmful. However, that doesn't mean that the conventional wisdom on microwave ovens is wrong. It just that there's some disagreement over whether microwaves do more than simply excite particles. In the meantime, what safety mechanisms are employed in modern microwave ovens? First off, you should always use your microwave oven according to the instructions that came with it. Failing to do so can turn a safe appliance into an unsafe appliance. Fortunately, however, there are plenty of safety mechanisms built into your household microwave. Radiation leaks in current day microwave ovens are very uncommon. Design and testing has improved drastically and you should not receive radiation in excess of normal levels. Conversely, if your microwave appears to be damaged, you should consider purchasing a new one. Although the likelihood that it is leaking radiation is small, it is still a change that is better not taken. All in all, the jury is still out on whether microwave ovens do something more to food than previously thought. However, the general consensus is that cooking your food in one is safe. So enjoy your cup of ramen, but remember to operate the appliance in accordance with recommended guidelines. This article was written by and for Microwave Ovens Central. |
